Abstract lettering is an approach to letters through abstract or geometric forms unhinged from scribal and calligraphic traditions. It involves distilling and rethinking the structure of letters.
This two hour workshop will guide participants through a systematic process of abstracting letterforms: to observe, deconstruct, construct and compose letters in a cohesive typographic style. This method is a great way to work and play with letters and develop a fine typographic sensibility.
Material:
- Participants can choose to letter by hand or digitally.
- Working by hand: paper to sketch, black marker, black pen.
- Working digitally: a vector drawing software (like Adobe Illustrator).
