Learning and teaching Type design in Bolivia
I would like to talk about Type design in Bolivia. Graphic design is a relatively new career, Type design itself, has not been taught as a class in the universities until a couple of years ago. Most of us, designers who wanted to specialize in this field, we did it in a self-taught way.
Daily practice, constantly testing, personal projects, some unpaid jobs and lots of curiosity, were the best school to build my knowledge about type design back then.
Last year, I had the opportunity to build a portfolio good enough to participate in Type Paris 2019. Learning from renowned teachers, real experts on the subject, sharing and working together with international peers, really blew my mind, and through that experience I felt I was on the right track and all efforts were paid off.
Besides design, teaching is one of my passions. Nowadays, my attempt is to teach Typography through Bolivian’s cultural diversity and identity. As many other South American countries, our daily living is a mix of cultures, tastes, music, colors, forms, and all this colorful mess is a great source of inspiration.
While in class, I encourage my students to see that potential and apply it on their projects, seeking along the way for a type design rich in national identity.
I believe, telling how we learn and teach type design form this side of the world, may be interesting for some other designers around the globe.
