Semantic typography exploration for teaching the English alphabet to the children of Indian vernacular medium schools

English alphabet system is one of the most widely used language systems of the world today which makes it very essential to be taught in the schools. Children of Indian vernacular medium schools find it very difficult to grasp the convectional western-inspired teaching methodology is followed to teach the English alphabet system. With the unsubstantial foundation of English which starts from learning the alphabet system, it becomes very difficult for the children of Indian vernacular medium schools to communicate in English in the later stages of their life because Language is a skill to practice not merely a subject to remember. In the current approach, the English alphabet was taught by using unfamiliar objects and their original names are written in English. The new proposed methodology was tested in the Bodo medium school situated in the Kokrajhar region of Assam, India. To solve this problem I decided to design a new semantic typography teaching approach in which, the English alphabet is taught by using familiar locally available objects and Bodo names of those objects written in English. Example: A for ‘Anjor’ which means rat in Bodo tribal language and from the letter ‘A’ itself the rat was drawn. The core foundation of the English language was being set up by using the local language. Due to which these children paid significantly more attention and revealed excitement which was missing in the case of the conventional alphabet teaching method.
