Teaching Typography in a high school Career and Technical Educational classroom

Career and Technical Education (CTE), also known as vocational high school, have the ability to specialize in the skilled trades, applied sciences, modern technologies, and career preparation. Students who specialize in a skilled trade, such as graphic design, have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of typography in a program called Design and Visual Communications (DVC). While meeting a set of State required framework standards for DVC, students are equipped to enter the workforce and/or enter a college or university. DVC standards are basic, but complex. Project based learning and assessments for teaching typography by DVC teachers is similar across Massachusetts CTE schools. However, teachers use different approaches to teach the same content, all within time constraints and across media. This presentation will include different approaches that are used to teach DVC typography standards with connections to employment and college readiness.
