Type Design for Minority Scripts
Dear explorers of typographic diversity՝
You may never need to make Armenian type for a client, but due to its attributes it actually serves as a superb “gateway script” into the world of minority type design. Creating an Armenian font is an achievable, enriching discovery – a sociocultural adventure that opens minds.
This workshop will help you develop the sensitivity needed to harmonize a new script with an existing typeface. Please have on hand a Latin font to work on, using any editor; ideally your own font, but not necessarily so (as long as you mind the EULA). If your base script is not Latin, no problem – accommodations will most gladly be made (simply alert the presenter in advance).
A serif typeface with contrast would offer the greatest learning opportunity, but anything goes. Specifically, please have available in your font the following characters in a polished state, which will inform the development of the Armenian: U h g s 3
During the workshop you will have opportunities to show your progress for feedback, either to the group as a whole, or to the instructor in private. The former is highly encouraged, since education is fundamentally communal.
